Cusumano - Italy - Sicily

Cusumano - Italy - SicilyFrom day one, the philosophy behind Cusumano, has been to emphasise the importance of knowledge or terroir, the investment in innovative technology and the building of a workforce which has rich experience in viticulture and above all an absolute passion for winemaking'. The Cusumano winery was established in 2001, when brothers Alberto and Diego, took over the management of the company from their father, Francesco. With the help of an intimate knowledge of the Sicilian terrain and consultant winemaker Mario Ronco, the Cusumano brothers today own over 400 hectares of vineyards across 7 holdings throughout Sicily. The locations of the vineyards in Sicily allow maximum expression of, not only the indigenous Sicilian grape varieties, but also classic varietals that, according to Diego, evolve to take on their own Sicilian identity. Cusumano are developing a reputation for quality, due in part to Diego and Alberto's setting the highest quality standards to every area of production, from vineyard to bottle to company identity. Testimony to this is the praise the winery has received from day one. Their flagship wine, Noa, was the first wine ever to receive a Tre Bicchieri at the Gambero Rosso on its very first vintage and the Italian and International awards have been flooding in ever since.

Aresti Family Vineyards Chile - Curicó Valley

Aresti Family Vineyards Chile - Curicó ValleyVery much a family business, Aresti was founded by Don Vicente Aresti Sr, Head of the Aresti family, when he moved to the Curico Valley in 1951. Initially no more than a sideline to his other successful businesses (fruit exporting, forestry and real estate to name but a few) Don Vicente and his family produced mainly bulk wine for the domestic market from vineyards in Curicó, Molina and Rio Claro, establishing the winery itself in Molina, 200 km south of Santiago. Then in 1995, Don Vicente Sr. decided it was time to use his 50 years of winemaking knowledge and experience to produce his own range of wines, completing the construction of one of the most modern wineries in Chile in 1999. With the help of his son, grandson and nephew, Don Vicente Sr. now produces over 1 million bottles of premium wine for worldwide export a year. Uniquely, with nearly 400 hectares of its own vineyards, Aresti is one of the largest vineyard owners in Chile, meaning they are among the few Estates who produce wines using only their own grapes. With a strong emphasis on quality wine production, the Aresti winemaking team take full advantage of the varied soils, climates and altitudes of the region to produce a range of wines that truly express the character of each varietal cultivated. Increasingly aware of the importance of terroir, the team have also recently sought out other vineyards in other regions, such as Leyda, Colchagua and Casablanca, to produce top of the range wines that represent the truest potential of Chilean wine regions.

Moncaro - Italy - Marche

Moncaro - Italy - MarcheFounded in 1964, Moncaro is a vast co-operative and the most important wine-producing operation in the beautiful Marche region. The company has three separate wineries, producing over 7 million bottles a year, situated in the principal viticultural areas of the Marche: Montecarotto, Camerano and Acquaviva. This allows master winemaker, Giuliano d'Ignazi and world famous consultant oenologist, Riccardo Cottarella, to create a strong point of difference, placing the focus firmly on the wines and grapes of the Marche region. Moncaro has made its name over the years by combining two factors that typify the potential of this exciting region the quality of its wines and a desire to push the boundaries both commercially and viticulturally. Uniquely, the co-operative members of Moncaro have given the President, Doriano Marchetti, full administrative power, meaning the company is run almost as a private concern allowing full strategic and competitive freedom. Over the years, many of the Moncaro wines have won several important awards and accolades, among which, the 'Italian White Wine of the Year' trophy for Le Vele at the IWC Awards in 2005 and 'Late Harvest Wine of the Year' for Passito 'Tordiruta' at the same competition in 2003 stand out as firmly establishing this innovative co-operative in the UK market.

La Scolca Italy - Piedmont

La Scolca Italy - PiedmontThe estate La Scolca was taken over between 1917 and 1919 by the great-grandfather of Giorgio Soldati who leads today the company together with his daughter Chiara, the fifth generation shown to the third millennium. In ninety years of activity the passion for wine has turned into profession, but the expression for Gavi is not tailed off. La Scolca Gavi Wine has become a Cult and has conquered the world, but has never betrayed its origins and its characteristic. The winery is located in the Rovereto commune of Gavi in Piedmont, considered by experts to have the best terroir for the Cortese grape variety. La Scola owns 50 hectares of vineyards, very low yields with old vines. Three years before the Gavi was granted DOC status, La Scolca registered the trademark Gave dei Gavi in the US, better known as the "Black label". Because of it's enormous success, other producers in the market started using a similar name, Gavi di Gavi, which has caused confusion in the mind of consumers. Gavi obteined DOCG status in 1998.

Zenato - Italy - Veneto

Zenato - Italy - VenetoOne of the most highly respected, family owned wineries in Veneto, Italy and beyond. Zenato was founded in 1960 by Master Winemaker, Sergio Zenato and his wife Carla Prospero. He chose some of the best sites for his vineyards and winery in San Benedetto di Lugana on the banks of Lake Garda and today presides over a 90 hectare estate that produces over 1.5 million bottles of quality wines a year. His children, Nadia and Alberto, have inherited his passion for quality winemaking; Nadia looks after the commercial aspects of the business with a hand from Alberto who also assists his father in the newly refurbished cellar. On the market, the Zenato name is synonymous with Amarone. Sergio's 'quality over quantity' approach results in benchmark Amarone and Amarone Riserva. But his other red wines, Ripassa (a acemini- Amarone using the Ripasso process) and Valpolicella in particular, are possibly the most typical examples you are likely to find of these classic Venetian wines. Indeed, Zenato was voted among the Top 5 Red Wines Producers in Italy at the 2004 London International Wine and Spirits Fair. Not to be overlooked, however, are the estates' outstanding white wines including Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay and the areas flagship wines Soave and Lugana, renowned for their clean and elegant fruit character.
